I'll be glad to see the end of these meaningless football games this week.

It is the fourth and final week of the NFL preseason, and it is likely that everybody is ready to get things rolling. Me too. NFL preseason is meaningless, and so are my preseason predictions. I have already received some emails regarding last week's picks, which shows the passion that fans really do have. But it is just that. Preseason. It is tough enough to pick the regular season games, let alone ones where most of the regulars hardly even play.

I am ready to take on all comers again this year, and emails with your thoughts and analysis are very welcome. I have taken a lot of playful abuse over the last couple of years, mainly due to jealousy of my football knowledge. That is understandable. However, it is not my fault that I happen to know more than you, and once again it will be proven this year. But that is part of the fun with this column. I will pick four preseason games this week, and then on to the regular season.

As always, home team in CAPS.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 4 New York Giants
It is certainly a plus that Asante Samuel is now signed, but I still have some questions with the Patriots defensive backfield. That might be their only weakness though. They should be ready to roll, at least through the regular season. I am not so sure about the Giants. It looks like Michael Strahan is going to end his "retirement", but I think the Giants' offense is going to be the key, specifically Eli Manning. The Patriots should win this preseason finale though.
Patriots 20-13

MINNESOTA VIKINGS 1 1/2 Dallas Cowboys
These two teams have a lot of issues, but being in the NFC is going to help. The Vikings just don't have a lot of talent, but their weak division is going to be a factor. As for the Cowboys, I think they are overrated. I think they have issues on offense, defense and coaching. I think their defense will be good, but probably not enough to carry them too far. And new coach Wade Phillips has not had a lot of success, and he has had his share of chances. Still, take the Cowboys here, as they are the better team, preseason or not.
Cowboys 23-17

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS 3 San Francisco 49ers
I don't seem to hear a lot of people talking about the Chargers in the AFC, but I think I know why. Norv Turner, plain and simple. He has had very little success as an NFL head coach, but he has so much talent in San Diego it might not matter. The Chargers are going to be a force in the AFC, and could very well go deep into the playoffs this year. The 49ers might well make the playoffs too. Defensive upgrades, a strong offense and mediocre division all play factors in San Francisco. They should be a team to watch. But don't watch them this week.
Chargers 26-14

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 1 1/2 Miami Dolphins
The Saints look to be pretty good this year, and being an NFC team, they could have playoff aspirations. They do have Carolina in their division, which should be their main competition. The Dolphins are a big question mark. An entire new coaching staff, and questionable talent on both sides of the ball. I think Trent Green will help, but not that much. Take the Saints here. There's a lot of work to be done. But it will really get cooking here in the near future. We're going to work real hard to live up to the responsibilities that go along with the bid."

Staubach led the Cowboys to their first two championships in franchise history - a 24-3 victory over Miami in Super Bowl VI in January 1972 and a 27-10 win over Denver in Super Bowl XII.

Texas has previously hosted the Super Bowl twice - in Houston in 2004 in the Texans' new stadium and in 1974 at Rice Stadium.

"Certainly, we're committed to do everything we can to make it the best Super Bowl there has ever been," Jones said.

"We think the capacity of our new stadium as well as the hotels and transportation were very much a positive."

The Indianapolis bid featured the Colts' domed stadium opening in 2008. However, the capacity is roughly 30,000 seats less than the Cowboys' new stadium.

Colts coach Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Motor Speedway chief executive officer Tony George and NCAA executive vice president Tom Jernstedt made the presentation for Indianapolis, who previously lost a Super Bowl bid to Minneapolis for the 1992 Super Bowl.

Glendale, Arizona hosts Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and was considered a long shot to get the nod over North Texas or Indianapolis for the 2011 game.

Tampa and Miami will host the Super Bowls in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Not since the Cowboys defeated Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena has a Super Bowl attendance exceeded 80,000.

NFL Draft Update

The wheeling and dealing among NFL teams continues even after this past weekend's NFL Draft.

The Tampa Bay Bucs swing a trade to acquire Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Ryan Sims, a former first round draft choice. Rex Grossman completed just six of 19 pass attempts against the visiting Minnesota Vikings, hoisting up three interceptions and posting an abysmal QB rating of 1.3. If Grossman had spiked the ball every time, his QB rating would have been 39.6.

Despite Grossman’s sub-par performance, the Bears escaped Soldier Field with a 23-13 victory, cashing in as 9-point favorites and improving to 10-2 straight up and a very profitable 8-4 against the spread. Coach Lovie Smith was quick to squash any talk of a quarterback change, pointing repeatedly to the club’s winning ways and questioning why he would want to change anything.

Smith, of course, doesn’t want Grossman to play this poorly. After committing 18 turnovers in his last seven starts, the former Florida Gator has steered Chicago’s offense toward the bottom of the NFL in efficiency. The Bears were ranked 21st in that department after Week 14; the Green Bay Packers were No. 20, and they’re just 4-8 SU and 4-7-1 ATS. But with everyone else on the Bears playing so well, Smith has the luxury of giving his still-developing QB some time to grow. Chicago’s defense and special teams are ranked No. 1 in terms of efficiency.

Both top-ranked units were on full display against the NFC North Division rival Vikings. Devin Hester ran a punt 45 yards for a touchdown, Ricky Manning found the end zone on a 54-yard interception return, and Tank Johnson tackled Vikings RB Ciatrick Fason for a safety to account for nearly all of Chicago’s scoring on the day. That win over Minnesota was no fluke; the Bears are so dominant on D that they lead the NFL in expected wins at 9.2, edging out the San Diego Chargers at 9.1.

Chicago will try to add a little bit more offense to the winning formula on Monday night when the St. Louis Rams play host. The Rams are in freefall at 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS over their past seven games to fall well behind Seattle in the NFC West. The biggest reason behind that slide is the St. Louis defense – it’s ranked 29th out of the 32 teams in efficiency, coughing up 153.3 yards per game on the ground. This should be a welcome breather for Grossman as he hands the ball off early and often to talented tailbacks Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson.

Dolphins Beat Bears 31-13

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers celebrates his 24-yard touchdown reception during the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago on November 5, 2006. The hometown Baltimore Ravens (6-2) jumped ahead 14-0 in the first five
minutes and never looked back in a 26-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals (4-4).

Washington kicker Nick Novak had a second chance to kick a gamewinning FG in the dying
seconds, nailing this one after missing a 49-yarder with 31 seconds to go, to
lift the hometown Redskins (3-5) to a 22-19 win over the Dallas Cowboys (4-4).

Green Bay Packers (3-5) surrendered a 24-10 loss to the hometown Buffalo Bills (3-5).
Hometown NY Giants (6-2) knocked off the Houston Texans (2-6) by a score of 14-10.
Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) took a 31-17 win over the hometown St. Louis Rams (4-4).

Visiting New Orleans Saints (6-2) continued their winning ways with a 31-14
rollover of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-6). Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3) disposed of the visiting
Tennessee Titans (2-6) by a score of 37-7.

San Francisco 49ers (3-5) won a game of FGs in a 9-3 snorefest over the visiting Minnesota Vikings
(4-4). The hometown Super Bowl champs Pittsburgh Steelers (2-6) again failed to show why they were
champs last season, in a 31-20 loss to the Denver Broncos (6-2).

San Diego Chargers (6-2) held off the visiting Cleveland Browns (2-6) by a score of 32-25.

Football News for Football Fans

Stay tuned for football news, views and picks...
